At ESC, we love working with our clients to assist them with developing strategic HR programs to enhance employee engagement and increase retention. Employee performance management is just one of the great HR weapons in our arsenal. We have created several training modules built around this one topic alone, however, it all boils down to three simple steps. We are happy to share them with you.

Step 1: Plan

Set clear and measurable expectations for each and every employee to mitigate frustration down the road.   Accordingly, personally review your expectations with each employee so they are aware of your needs and wants for their position and the company.

Step 2: Coach

“The art of conversation, like everything else, can be cultivated. No one can expect to talk well without practice.” (John Lubbock.) Some employees may need coaching and guidance for improving their skills and attitude.  In addition, ongoing feedback from coaching will reinforce the behavior and performance that is expected. For the best results, coach each employee differently based on their needs. In other words, don’t adopt a “one size fits all” approach.

Step 3. Appraise.

Evaluate employee performance to ensure that they are the best fit for the position and company. Review past and current performance. Focus on future goals to keep employees motivated. Correspondingly, allow the employee to evaluate you as a manager, the position, and the company as well. Lastly, listen to and document any ideas and suggestions employees may have.
