As the weather turns warmer, this weekend often marks the unofficial start of summer with barbecues and parties. Memorial Day is a day of both celebration and grief, honoring our heroes and reflecting on their tragic loss. Our national day of remembrance is often felt most deeply among the families and communities who have personally lost friends and loved ones, and we hope everyone will take some time to honor those heroes who courageously gave their lives on this somber day.

John F. Kennedy said, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter the words, but to live by them.” Here are some ways that employers can live by those words:

  • Celebrate your military veteran employees,
  • Provide an opportunity for employees to share the significance of this day for them,
  • Participate in local Memorial Day events to connect with your community, or
  • Volunteer in support of a local veterans’ memorial project.
