Quiz Corner: Employee Performance Evaluations Q: Am I required to give my employees annual performance evaluations? A: There is no law that mandates you provide your employees with annual written performance evaluations. However, it is important to document any performance issues and an annual evaluation is one way to help do that. In addition to being a helpful tool in identifying trends of high or low performance, annual evaluations are a great way to spend time with each employee to formally talk about their role in your organization and what their future goals and plans are. Most employees enjoy receiving formal feedback from their supervisors. If you do provide annual evaluations, don’t forget that the day-to-day coaching and mentoring of employees is just as important and that pertinent performance issues should be addressed in a timely manner outside of the annual evaluation utilizing the progressive discipline process.
